Walk into any Kochi detailing studio and you'll hear four names — ceramic, graphene, borophine, PPF. They're all "protection." They're priced differently. They protect against different things. Most customers walk in confused, walk out booked for whatever the salesman pushed hardest.

This guide does the work the salesman should: matches your car, your driving, and your budget to the right product. We've installed thousands of these coatings at our Udayamperoor workshop since 2007. Here's how we actually advise.

The four options, in plain English

Ceramic coating

Ceramic is a liquid polymer. It bonds chemically with the paint, hardens into a transparent layer, and adds hydrophobic protection — water beads, washes get faster, paint resists swirl marks. Available in 1-year, 3-year, and 5-year tiers. Starts at ₹12,000.

Graphene coating

Graphene is a newer-generation polymer with an additional graphene additive. Compared to ceramic, it adds better heat dissipation and longer durability. Practically: the same protection profile as ceramic, lasting 30-40% longer at equivalent tier. Roughly 30-40% more expensive than ceramic.

Borophine coating

Borophine is a hard-shell coating using boron-based chemistry. The differentiator is scratch resistance — the coating itself takes the hit before the clear coat does. Best for daily drivers in stop-and-go traffic where minor abrasions are routine.

Paint Protection Film (PPF)

PPF is a different category entirely. Where coatings are chemical bonds, PPF is a physical film — a transparent self-healing material applied over the paint. Stops physical damage like stone chips, road rash, and minor scratches. Doesn't add gloss; adds armour. Starts at ₹35,000 for partial coverage.

The decision tree

Forget the marketing hierarchy. Here's how to actually choose:

"My car is brand new and I want to keep it looking factory-fresh."

Get ceramic at the tier that matches how long you'll keep it. 1-year if you'll change in 2 years, 3-year if you'll keep it 4-5 years, 5-year if it's long-term. Ceramic sized for new paint applies efficiently — no correction needed, faster turnaround, longer effective durability.

"I drive in heavy city traffic and my car already has swirl marks."

Two options. Borophine if the priority is preventing future scratches — the hard shell resists daily contact. Paint correction + ceramic if you want to fix existing damage first then maintain. We can talk through which fits better at the inspection.

"I drive long highway distances and I'm tired of stone chips."

PPF on the front end. Ceramic alone doesn't stop physical damage from stones at 80+ km/h — only film does. Most customers add ceramic on the rest of the car for the gloss benefit.

"I have a luxury car and money is not the constraint, but I want maximum protection."

The premium-customer answer is full-body PPF + ceramic over the top. Film stops physical damage, ceramic adds the gloss and water-bead behaviour. Both protect the underlying paint. Most luxury detailing customers in Kochi book this combination.

"I just want my car to look better and stay clean longer."

Ceramic 3-year tier. The sweet spot for most cars. Affordable enough to refresh every few years, durable enough to actually deliver value, hydrophobic enough to make washing a pleasure instead of a chore.
